  • +36 · YouTube - Lejos de Ti - Angel Canales

Filed Jan 31, 2007 at 7:16 PM · Most of the little kiddies I see dancing at the club trying to be badasses never have even heard of el differente. And thats a tragedy, considering he was one of the best and most innovative singers of his time. Yeah, he got a little silly with some of his songs. But who cares? This man gifted us with some of the best and most interesting salsa ever laid down. His interpretations were always original, and his arrangements were not only fun but often challenging to dance to. At any rate, if you dont know, now you know. Angel Canales. El Diferente.

  • +165 · Old School Salsa Video - Hector Lavoe y Willie Colon - Aguanile

Filed Jan 31, 2007 at 7:09 PM · The picture is faded. The sound quality terrible. The tape completely worn out. But despite 30 plus years and all the ravages of time, the groove can STILL be felt bursting through on this clip. Compare that to so many modern artists who barely sound decent even after all the wonders of modern technology have been used to help their voice, and it shows you that no matter how many tricks you use, nothing can replace true sabor. This video post is dedicated to a fellow afficionado that I only know as decuadrosp. Keep it alive bro!

  • +32 · Salsa Music Video - TIENE MONTUNO - ISMAEL MIRANDA

Filed Dec 20, 2006 at 8:30 AM · I was looking for that heater "Agua Que Va Caer", but I couldnt find it anywhere, so I decided to put up this great clip. Although I think that Miranda is the second best Ismael in salsa, he still blazes the track. Damn, it sucks posting these videos up late at night! As soon as that music gets going, I want to go wake up my wife and rip it!!!

  • +10 · Timba Video - Irakere with Chucho Valdes - Bacalao con Pan

Filed Dec 20, 2006 at 8:21 AM · Can we get some love for Timba? Irakere is a great Cuban band that has some incredible songs. But, as a jazz band, some of their songs can be inaccessible for beginners. Still, I love them. I found this old clip on YouTube, and had to post it. Although I love the smoothness of salsa, sometimes that beat-it-up vibe of timba is just the thing to get loose. 50 seconds into this clip, it goes down. Enjoy!

  • +15 · Salsa Video - Salsa Celtica documentary

Filed Dec 11, 2006 at 5:59 PM · Speaking of international salsa, this was another group that blew me away. Salsa Celtica represents salsa out of Scotland, of all places. Can you believe it? It doesn't seem like bagpipes and bongos would mix very well. In fact, I was skeptical when I first heard about it. But damned if they didn't pull it off!

Whereas Orquesta de la Luz just played straight up salsa, what I love about Celtica is that they managed to successfully blend it with musical elements from their own culture. That not only informs salsa as a musical form, but also expands it. I'm going to have to go hunt down the video for Salsa Rai now to keep this international journey rolling.

  • +28 · YouTube - Orquesta de La Luz - Salsa Caliente del Japón

Filed Dec 11, 2006 at 5:56 PM · I totally forgot about this group until I heard a song by them at a recent dance party. I remember being completely freaked out when I found out that they were Japanese! It just goes to show you that salsa is truly a worldwide phenomenon, and that you don't have to be latino in order to have sabor. (Although... it doesnt hurt :)

  • +37 · Great Salsa Songs - Gilberto Santa Rosa - LA AGARRO BAJANDO Y MENTIRA

Filed Nov 21, 2006 at 1:13 PM · The local salsa band, Orquesta Rumba Cafe, was playing this the other night, and I thought I would post it up for your salsa listening pleasure. It's a good song with lots of interesting terrain to play with. Gilberto Santa Rosa. Gotta Love It.
  • +55 · Salsa Video Clip - Todo tiene su final - Hector Lavoe

Filed Nov 17, 2006 at 4:43 AM · The classics! I could watch these videos all day. I promise I'll update the selection soon... I know I've been top heavy on Hector Lavoe lately... but I just love the style. Nowdays, you see people just up and go for it from the start. But, what I enjoy about this performance is how they hold it back and wait until the right moment.

It's like watching an old kung fu flick. They hero is minding his own business, doing his own thing. But when the bad guys move in and surround him, you know its about to go down. Thats how I feel when the coro singers step up to the mic at 1:55. I also like how none of these guys are fronting for the camera. They aren't trying to be seen or get their picture on the TV. They are just JAMMING.

La Voz was the man. I'm really nervous about the upcoming biopic with J-Lo and Marc Anthony. Marc Anthony might be skinny enough to play Hector Lavoe, but is he heavy enough? Lord knows his skills fall FAR short of El Cantante. And Lavoe lived a rough life. But, maybe Anthony will prove me wrong. After all, even attempting to play HL takes guts.

  • +92 · Classic Salsa Songs - SIGUE FELIZ - HECTOR LAVOE

Filed Nov 15, 2006 at 6:34 AM · Man... this video rocks. They really knew how to put it down back then. The groove is so happy and positive, it just makes me want to start dancing and smiling. How is it possible to long for a time that you never even lived in? Maybe thats just how it feels when the music speaks to your soul. What a wonderful clip, I hope you enjoy it. Keep real salsa alive.

  • +36 · Salsa frenzy hits ASU

Filed Nov 10, 2006 at 11:42 PM · Clicking heels, salsa music and laughter from slow learners can be heard in the UC every Wednesday from 9 to 10 p.m. The sounds come from room 208 where students are learning new dance techniques. A year ago, senior Anthony Sanchez came up with the idea to offer students a free service and spark an interest in something that's been a part of him his whole life. The salsa lessons he conducts will run through the year, and possibly longer if he can find someone to keep them going.
