At Hispanic Gala, Not A Single Wallflower

With salsa music and Hollywood celebrities to make the do-gooding more fun, 2,000 Latino political, business and entertainment types feasted and toasted at the Washington Convention Center for the cause of scholarships and fellowships sponsored by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. The idea is to groom a new generation in the peculiar folkways of political Washington and corporate America.

The great J.Lo debate

Jennifer Lopez tries to be everything to her fans, an all-purpose J.Lo, and among fellow Latinas she's also become a point of contention.
Because she's the face of a growing generation of Latinos -- those who know some Spanish but don't necessarily speak it fluently; those who were born here and haven't lived in the country their parents are from, whether Puerto Rican, Cuban, or Mexican-American -- she tends to carry a whole community on her shoulders while maintaining a place in American pop culture.
